Melvin Ellis Griffith, Jr.

Melvin Ellis Griffith, Jr. was born on August 13, 1963, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Flora Jean Williams Griffith and Melvin Ellis Griffith, Sr. He grew up in a loving home alongside his three brothers, Kevin, Steve, and Claudell. After the passing of his mother at an early age, Melvin was raised by his grandmother, Flora Williams, whose unconditional love and support helped him face life's challenges and strengthened his faith in God.

Melvin graduated from Marion Abramson High School in New Orleans and later attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he played football. Following college, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as a reservist. After receiving an honorable discharge, Melvin relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, and began a distinguished career with the DeKalb County Police Department.

Melvin truly loved and valued his role in law enforcement, a dedication that led to his promotion to the rank of Sergeant. He devoted more than 20 years of his life to serving and protecting his community.

In retirement, Melvin embraced life at a slower pace, spending his time doing the things he loved most-sharing stories, cooking, watching football, and enjoying precious moments with family and friends. His love for law enforcement never faded, and because he missed being an officer, Melvin returned to policing for a short time at Georgia State University.

Melvin is survived by his beloved daughter, Sheena (Erroll); his brothers, Kevin (Sherina), Steve (Lenora), Claudell, Michael (Charlene), and Dion; and his sisters, Tina (Karl), Michelle, and Monique (Ernest). He is also survived by his stepmother, Diane; stepdaughter, Raquel; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a godchild, Cori; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Melvin also shared a lifelong friendship with Willie Bender.
