On Jan 8, 2021, Marie Priscilla Jackson Walls of Slidell, LA, departed her earthly home to rest eternally in heaven with our Lord, Jesus Christ. She was 90 years old. Born on Sept 14, 1930, at Flint-Goodridge Hospital, she was the eldest child of the late Charlie and Augustine Jackson. She was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Joseph R. Jackson.
Priscilla was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in 1948, and went on to study home economics at Xavier University where she graduated in 1953. She went on to pursue a career in dietetics, working at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and Southern University in Baton Rouge. Based on a recommendation from the nuns at Xavier, she was offered a position with the Sisters of Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield, California. She would become the first black professional hired by the hospital. She went on to work for Mercy Hospital both in California and New Orleans for 40 years. While in California, she renewed an old friendship and married the late James Albert Walls of Napoleonville, LA. To that union one child, Almitra, was born.
Upon her retirement, she devoted her time to family and friends, participating whole heartedly in the planning of family reunions and picnics; acting as secretary and historian; caring for and visiting with sick family members and friends. Always a person with a direct approach, she would not hesitate to say what was on her mind, but in her words, she’d only tell you “cause she loved you.”
She leaves to treasure her memory, a daughter and son-in-law Almitra and Richard Love of Slidell, LA; god-son Glenn Brousseau of New Orleans, LA; loving and devoted friends Patricia Peters of Hattiesburg, MS; Sarah Ann Morgan of Kenner, LA and Emma Cooley of Waveland, MS; countless relatives of the Jackson, Brousseau and Walls families; friends old and new.
