George Bell Shands, Jr., 73, of Lacombe, LA, entered peacefully into heaven on August 12,2024, in Slidell, LA. He was born on June 3, 1951, in Great Lakes to the late George B. Shands, Sr., and Louise B. Shands. He grew up in Evanston, IL.
George leaves to cherish his life, his loving wife of 39 years, Eunice Cousin Shands, one sister, Lynn King, two brother- in- laws, Forrest Cousin (Yolonda), and Paul Cousin, Sr., two sister -in-laws, Kathern Carroll (Charles), and Alice Cousin, Godchild, Ashlyn Narcisse, a host of special nephews, nieces, relatives, cousins and friends. George will be missed by his beloved dog, Cooper.
George was a proud graduate of Evanston Township High School and Nothern Illinois University, where he earned a degree in criminal Justice. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He began his career and retired after 35 years of service as a NSU Police Officer at Northwestern State University in Evanston, IL.
George converted to the Catholic faith 20 years ago. As a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Evanston, IL. He was a 4th degree Mason in the Knights of Columbus. George was very excited about his move to Lacombe. He wanted to enjoy and be a part of Eunice's extended family. He loved the culture, the food, the music, the hospitality, and the people. Of course, he loved those New Orleans Saints and was a big, dedicated fan of the Chicago Bulls, Chicago Bears, and Chicago Cubs.
To know George, was to love him. He always openly expressed his love for Eunice.
