Charlie Velton McMooain was born on February 9, 1939, in Slidell, Louisiana, to Gertrude and David McMooain. He peacefully departed this life surrounded by love and family on August 19, 2025. Charlie was educated in the St. Tammany Parish school system and went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army. He later married the love of his life, the late NeOrlean Howard McMooain of Slidell, Louisiana, with whom he shared 41 years of marriage. Together, they built a strong and loving family. A hardworking and skilled man, Charlie retired from Shell Oil after many years of dedicated service as an offshore mechanic. Known as a true “jack of all trades,” he poured and finished cement, built his own home, hunted well into his 70s, and could fix anything that was placed before him. Always sharp and always well-dressed, he was a man of great pride who “smelled like a million dollars.” Charlie accepted Christ at an early age and united with Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church. He had many passions in life—he loved raccoon hunting, cheering for his beloved New Orleans Saints, and immersing himself in western novels. Every morning, he could be found sitting at the counter with a cup of black coffee, a pack of peanut butter crackers, a banana and the daily newspaper in hand. He was preceded in death by his wife, NeOrlean Howard McMooain; his parents, Gertrude and David McMooain; his daughter, Escrelita Carmouche; and siblings Brunetta Richardson, Wilford McMooain, Vernell Javery, Dorothy Bezue, LeeArthur McMooain, Dorazell Gillum, and Emelda Irvin. Charlie leaves to cherish his memory three children: D'Andrea McMooain Chatman (Samuel), Vashita Carmouche Batiste, and Cedric David McMooain; fifteen grandchildren: Jeanne (Lilton Sr.), Reginald (Megan), Rashita, India, Chyna, Tyler, Gerard (Jynnea), Xavier, Joshua, Ian, Alexandria, Hannah, Cody, Raegn, and Lauren; and seven great-grandchildren: Samaria, Lilton Jr., Mc’Kenzi, Nyla, Dwayne Jr., Tejah and Andie. He is also survived by his brothers Louis McMooain (Linder) and Wilford “Peter” McMooain (Rose), his sister Ora Vernita Kelly, a host of godchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Charlie will be remembered as a devoted family man, a faithful servant, and a man of strength, wisdom, and endless love. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
